Every year Cividale hosts historical re-enactments, cultural festivals, concerts, open-air shows, a beautiful theatre season, competitions and sports exhibitions, antiques markets and seasonal and thematic markets.

Apply to the Sportello Informacittà to consult the updated monthly calendar of events, but it may also be useful to make a note of some of the traditional appointments in the Cividale calendar:

  • 6 January, The Mass of the Great Sword and Historical Pageant of the Patriarch Marquard’s entrance in Cividale (1336): the celebration of an ancient liturgical rite and of the person who is reputed to have introduced the ceremonial;
  • MARCH: Swallows’ March, the non-competitive walk par excellence;
  • EASTER SUNDAY AND MONDAY: The Game of the “Truc”, a playful tradition peculiar to the Cividale area;
  • JULY, Mittelfest, the international Central European theatre festival that animates the town squares;
  • JULY/AUGUST, Concerts of Chamber Music: churches, villas and castles in the area open their doors;
  • AUGUST, the Palio of San Donato: transforms the old town centre into a large medieval stage for an entire weekend on the feast of the Patron Saint;
  • SEPTEMBER, Sport Feast, the festival to get to know new sports disciplines,
    from OCTOBER to APRIL: Theatrical season of Prose, Music and Dance and Children’s Theatre
  • OCTOBER: Cividale Castelmonte Timed Climb: for those who love speed on four wheels uphill;
  • 31 OCTOBER: National Urban Trekking Day, dedicated to the discovery of the most hidden and curious corners of the town, following a themed route;

Finally, for those who love to wander around markets of all sizes:

  • EVERY SATURDAY MORNING: Weekly market of food and non-food products;
  • EVERY FOURTH SUNDAY of the MONTH: the Devil’s Chest, the picturesque market of antiques and old and used things;
  • START OF THE SEASON: the extraordinary Street market with a seasonal theme;
  • Mid OCTOBER: Pumpkin Festival, hand-made and ancient tradition of pumpkin carving;
  • NOVEMBER: San Martino, a meeting with wines and gastronomic products and stands of the traditional festive market;
  • DECEMBER: Christmas market, a classic of the end of year festivities.
