Palazzo de Nordis

HISTORY

Palazzo de Nordis occupies a place of honour in the heart of Cividale.

It is an elegant building of the second half of the fifteenth century, remodelled as early as the sixteenth century, whose impressive main door opens onto Piazza Duomo, while a second refined entrance overlooks Corso Mazzini, the shopping street

It is a symbolic venue for the City: for over two hundred years, in fact, Palazzo de Nordis has preserved the historical and artistic memory of the area, thus contributing to its enhancement and knowledge at international level

In the nineteenth century its rooms already housed the rich archaeological, historical-artistic and archival-library collections of the Regio Moderno Museum, a forerunner model of innovative systems for the conservation of artefacts and a pioneering example of functional space for scholars: starting from that original nucleus, promoter of research and historical in-depth study, the National Archaeological Museum was to develop, which would remain at the de Nordis until 1990, when it was transferred to the Palazzo dei Provveditori Veneti

Since 2010 Palazzo de Nordis has been used as a venue for temporary exhibitions aimed at enhancing the historical and artistic heritage of the Region and has hosted important national conferences.

With an enhancement agreement signed by MiBACT and and the Municipal Administration of Cividale del Friuli on 31 January 2014, extended on 07 September 2016, the entire building, which is owned by the Italian State, was loaned to the Municipality for use in an important project that preserves the symbolic meaning and history of Palazzo de Nordis:

  • on the ground floor there is the Visitors’ Centre, which offers a new and innovative tourist information and reception service, the Sportello Informacittà, aimed at the knowledge, enhancement and promotion of the historical-cultural, naturalistic and enogastronomic heritage of the territory;
  • on the upper floors, in a permanent exhibition, is the precious collection of modern and contemporary paintings donated by the De Martiis Family to the City of Cividale del Friuli
