LONGOBARD ITINERARIES
The serial site “The Longobards in Italy.. The Places of Power (568-774 AD)” includes the most important Longobard monumental traces existing on the Italian territory, which are located from the north to the south of the peninsula, that fell within the domains of the most important Longobard Duchies.
In particular:
– The area of the Gastaldaga with the Longobard Temple and the Episcopal Complex in Cividale del Friuli (UD)
– The monumental area with the Monastic Complex of San Salvatore – Santa Giulia in Brescia
– The Castrum with the Torba Tower and the Church of Santa Maria foris portas at Castelseprio Torba (VA)
– The Basilica of San Salvatore in Spoleto (PG)
– The Temple of Clitumnus at Campello sul Clitunno (PG)
– The complex of Santa Sofia in Benevento
– The Sanctuary of San Michele at Monte Sant’Angelo (FG)
The distances separating the locations in the network are easily covered by car, train or plane, depending on the traveller’s place of departure
A short break or a longer holiday can offer the time to satisfy their choice:
- the simplest choice would be to dedicate an autonomous space to each location, taking the opportunity to explore the richness and beauty of the surrounding regional territory, as for example in Friuli Venezia Giulia following the route that links the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Aquileia, Cividale, Palmanova;
- the more articulated choice, connecting several destinations, would be to take inspiration from the itineraries of the educational trips that have seen thousands and thousands of students travel across the peninsula to discover Langobardia Maior and Langobardia Minor
