Located in the religious buildings of the Episcopal complex, which were renovated and enlarged during the Longobard period, were the Baptistery of Callixtus and the Altar of Ratchis. The two works, now visible at the Christian Museum and Treasury of the Cathedral, represent the most singular sculptural experiences of the Longobard period.
Elegant and harmonious, the baptismal font presents symbolic Christian representations sculpted with immediacy and realism: floral decorative elements, plant shoots and animal figures.
On the side walls of the Altar of Ratchis the scenes, framed by decorative motifs, are animated by figures made dynamic by the thick folds of their garments and the bright colours.
