The Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle, which comprises the Longobard Temple, is one of the most important urban centres of Longobard Cividale. In the Early Middle Ages, the Longobard Gastaldaga, seat of the royal court in the town, was located in the Valle area.
The Longobard Temple, also known as the Oratory of Santa Maria in Valle, was built in the third quarter of the 8th century as the Palatine chapel of the royal court.
Its interior decoration, with figurative and ornamental stuccoes and a series of frescoes executed in a courtly and refined style, is unique in its kind and one of the most splendid and ambitious commissions that have survived since the 8th century.
